Potato, with a cultivated area of more than 152,000 hectares and a production of more than five million tons per year, is one of the most important crops in Iran, and the export of its product has been able to make a significant contribution to the national economy. In 2018-2019, to investigate the presence of potato cyst nematodes (PCNs), 850 soil and plant samples were collected from potato fields in Hamedan province and neighboring provinces, including Kurdistan, Zanjan, Qazvin, Markazi, Lorestan and Kermanshah, with emphasis on the areas cultivated by potato farmers from Hamedan province. Based on the morphological and molecular characteristics, Globodera rostochiensis was identified as the only PCN species in the country in Hamedan province and at one site in Kurdistan province. In Hamedan province, 63.8% of potato fields (8932 hectares) were infested with the potato golden cyst nematode. The PCN was not isolated and identified in other potato growing areas in Hamedan province and the sampled provinces. In the city of Dizaj in Kurdistan province, three sites infested with the nematode were observed and in a field with an area of 35 hectares and the cysts were extracted and identified. The nematode appears to be spreading to other potato cultivation areas in the country. If this trend continues, controlling of this nematode will be difficult and costly, and its presence in export shipments will be an important barrier to potato exports
